How to Avoid Common Mistakes to Get High Score in IELTS Test

IELTS is not easy, and students aiming to study abroad know this well. The test grades English language proficiency in all four aspects naming, writing, listening, reading, and speaking. Many people think that the listening section is the most difficult section of the IELTS exam, while many believe that reading is the hardest. However, every part of the IELTS test requires a lot of concentration, and the candidate has to work fast. Therefore, many end up making mistakes, which cost them high scores in IELTS test.

Tips to Avoid Mistakes

Every applicant prepares and works hard for the IELTS exam. Many take preparatory classes and help of professional coaches to enhance their vocabulary, improve their listening skills and increase their writing skills. While all this preparation is inevitable, candidates must be ready for test day and know how to avoid the mistakes, utilize their time and approach each section. Therefore, we have listed practical solutions to avoid common mistakes in order to get the desired high band score in the IELTS test.

Be Focused

Focus is the most crucial skill that you need for IELTS test as you will have to keep yourself very focused on finding the right answers to most of the questions. We all know that time constraint leads to rushing to answer and make stupid mistakes. Many questions can leave you in a state of dilemma where you are unable to remember the answer. There are also many wrong answers that appear right.

No matter what part it is, pausing and taking a deep breath before answering can help you focus and center yourself and your thoughts. Even in a speaking test, you will be given 5 minutes to collect your thoughts. So, use them to make shorthand notes to refer to when you begin speaking.

Pay Attention to Written Material

When answering essay questions, whether the answer has to be within 3 words or 250, a candidate has to paraphrase and try and stay within the count. A few words over or under are acceptable. However, exceeding or falling too short is not good.

Many students end up copying the words from the paragraph onto the sheet when attempting the writing section when paraphrasing is required to ensure the accurate word count fit. So, make sure to read the instructions precisely and stick to the word limit. Because the closer you are to the count, there is a better chance to have a shot at feel-good band 9.

Strategize

Every test is a point’s game. If you have not strategized, then you will be double guessing at every point. For example, should you give more time to the second essay when writing or to go for the last section in reading, are vital decisions that can impact your score because the tests get increasingly difficult within sections?

So, making a plan grounded on your strengths and weaknesses when you are preparing for the exam is crucial. Make use of practice classes to study what carries more points and which sections take longer to solve for you. Getting professional help will also teach you how to strategize for the successful accomplishment of the IELTS test effectively.

Leave Time for Revision

It applies to every exam in life; however, in the IELTS, even minor mistakes can make you lose a band which will conclude your worthiness to apply for certain institutes or a job.

So, when you finish a task, give it a quick read to make sure you are on point. Revising answer after you complete each answer is better than revising at the end because many people do not get time to review at the end and it costs them big.

Giving the last 5 minutes for revision instead of writing more material is also a good strategy. It helps to eye the little mistakes and correct them. But if you can’t leave the time for revision at the end, go for the previous suggestion.

Don’t Pay Very detailed Attention to the Difficult Questions

Leave difficult questions for the end because if you spend a lot of time on questions that you find difficult, it will only be a waste of the valuable exam time. Also, you will not be able to answer all the easier questions and simply lose points.

So, if you do not know the right answers to some questions, just leave them and move on. This way, you can answer all the questions that you know the best and still get time to return to the difficult questions at the end because you will not be wasting any time.

Only Read the Task When to Attempt

Do not start reading the text without looking at the tasks first. Because when you read, it should be done with some questions in mind. Otherwise, you will be reading the text, then the questions, then the text again. So, you will only end up reading the texts too many times, and there is no time to waste with such a practice.

So, read the tasks and questions first and then the text and think about the information you need to locate to answer those questions when you are reading.
