There are two types of IELTS test available: General (training) and Academic IELTS. IELTS Academic is for the students aiming to study abroad for higher education. On the other hand, IELTS General is for individuals aiming to migrate to countries like Australia, Canada, and the UK or applying for work opportunities in states where English is the first language. You have the option to apply for paper-based IELTS and computer-based exam.

IELTS Test Format

IELTS tests are designed to grade English language proficiency in all four aspects of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Thus, the test is segmented in these four basic modules, and various tests are taken to assess the English language skills in a total time length of less than 3 hours.

Depending on its nature, IELTS Academic and IELTS General differ in reading and writing test aspect but follow the same speaking and listening segments. The reading, writing, and listening tests are conducted on the same date while the speaking segment is usually conducted on a different date.

Test Scoring and Minimum Recommended Score

IELTS score is valid for 2 years, and the admission criteria vary across educational institutes and the countries as well. However, 6 Bands are considered to be a must when it comes to IELTS scoring by experts of the field.

The scores for IELTS range from Band 1 to Band 9 of skill levels in English language proficiency testing. However, the overall band score is obtained by calculating the average of individual band scores of all the four test modules, and band score is rounded off to the nearest whole or half band.

Here is the IELTS Band scale:

1 Non-user

3 Extremely limited user
4 Limited user
5 Modest user
6 Competent user
