Studying abroad is a dream of many students. But choosing the right university which best fits your requirement is a difficult task. Proper Research is required to find the most appropriate course/degree meeting your budget constraints. Not only academic excellence but the overall experience, university fees and scholarships, course outlines, the studying environment, and overall expenses are some of the critical factors to consider. Here are a few factors that students should consider before choosing a university to study abroad:
University ranking and academic performance
University ranking and academic performance are the most important factors students must consider before enrolling for admission at any institute/university. There are many credible university ranking platforms such as QS World Ranking, Times Higher Education World Ranking etc. that provides authentic information about different universities’ rankings. Students should also consider/check university ranking in the particular course you are interested to enroll for.
Location, safety, and climate
Location is a very important factor to consider for studying abroad. Whether the place is close to home country or not, this can have major cost implications. Similarly cost of living in some cities/countries are higher than others. There are many cities and places that have very harsh climates that might not be suitable for Pakistani students. Students should opt for a study destination with climate that best suits them. Additionally, it is important to also check the status of crime rate/safety while choosing your study destination.
Job opportunities and wages
Most of the Pakistani students have to pay their accommodation and university fee on their own. So, before joining a university, students should check out the job opportunities and wages in that city. Wages can vary from city to city and job opportunities are also not equal in all cities. Additionally, it is important to also consider if the study destination you opt for offers post study work permit or not. For example, Australia offers up to four years of Post-Study Work (PSW) rights to international students post completion of their respective bachelor's degree. So this can be added advantage for students who are opting to study in Australia.
University fee and Scholarships
University fee is the main expense of studying abroad. University fee depends on various factors whether the university is a private or public sector university, its location, what is the university ranking, courses being offered etc., and it also varies from country to country. Education in some countries is more expensive comparative to others. It all depends upon your budget; accordingly, you should decide which university you may apply to. Similarly, public-sector universities are less expensive as compared to private-sector universities. To calculate university fee, the easiest way is to first visit each university’s website and see the cost per semester/annual fee of the particular program. Create an excel sheet for comparative statement, where you may note down fees of different universities and programs and compare which one suits you better.
Many universities award/offer scholarships to international students. Students can get fully funded or partially funded scholarships in universities on merit basis. Students must try to get scholarships this will reduce their financial burden and they can fully focus on their studies.
On campus accommodation
Accommodation is a very big problem for international students going abroad to study. Students can face problem if universities do not have on-campus accommodation. Accommodation outside the campus can be expensive and may incur more travelling cost for the students.
Course duration and outline
Students should thoroughly go through the course outline of the degree program they are interested to apply for. Duration of the program is also equally important. For example, if a student is going to enroll for an MBA program, what would be the program duration, how many semesters, what courses being offered in each semester etc. are some of the questions that students must have answers to before applying for admission.
To conclude, it is important for students to consider all above mentioned factors while choosing a university to study abroad.
