Study Master's in Australia After a Bachelor's

Study Masters in Australia After a Bachelor's Degree: 2027 Guide for Pakistani Students

Finishing a bachelor’s degree in Pakistan and planning to study masters in Australia raises one question before any other: will your degree be accepted for direct entry?

Most guides skip that question. A 16-year BS and a 14-year BCom can lead to very different routes, so we’ve built this guide around your starting point rather than a generic list of universities.

Quick Answer

Pakistani students can study a master's in Australia after a recognised bachelor's degree. A 16-year degree is the usual base for direct entry, while a 14-year degree may need a qualifying program, graduate certificate or graduate diploma first. Most students also need an English test score, a Confirmation of Enrolment, health cover and a subclass 500 Student visa, which costs from AUD 2,500.

Entry rules differ by university and course, so use this guide to narrow your options, then confirm them on the course page. All government figures below were checked on 6 November 2026.

Master Degree in Australia for International Students: Your Main Options

Australia offers three main types of master’s degree. Your choice affects your study length, your entry requirements and how long you can work after graduating.

Type Best for Typical length Post-study stay on the 485 visa
Coursework Career change or professional growth 1–2 years 2 years
Research Academic careers and PhD plans Up to 2 years 3 years
Extended Professional degrees with longer training 3–4 years 2 years

Length also depends on your previous study. The same course can run for one, one and a half or two years, depending on your background.

Two shorter qualifications matter here too. A graduate certificate usually takes about six months and a graduate diploma about one year. Both can work as stepping stones into a master’s.

14-Year or 16-Year Degree? Find Your Route to an Australian Master’s

This is the first thing we’d check on any Pakistani transcript. Australian universities compare your degree with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), where a bachelor’s sits at Level 7 and a master’s at Level 9.

A four-year BS, BBA, BE or BCom (Hons) is generally the strongest base for direct entry. A two-year BA, BSc or BCom is a different case, because some universities assess it below an Australian bachelor’s degree.

Macquarie University and UTS, for example, list a completed two-to-three-year bachelor’s as an entry point for undergraduate study. That shows why a 14-year graduate should never assume direct master’s entry.

Starting Routes

16-year degree, related subject, solid grades: Direct master's entry. What to do first: Shortlist courses and prepare your English test.

16-year degree, unrelated subject: Longer master's, or a graduate certificate or diploma. What to do first: Look for courses open to any discipline.

14-year degree only: Qualifying program, graduate diploma or a further degree. What to do first: Ask how the university assesses your degree before paying any fee.

14-year degree plus a two-year Pakistani master's: Depends on the university. What to do first: Send both transcripts and ask for an assessment.

Final-semester student: Conditional offer. What to do first: Apply with your results so far.

One published example is Macquarie’s Masters Qualifying Program. It is listed for students with studies assessed at AQF Level 6, including a two-year overseas bachelor’s, and leads to direct entry into a master’s degree after completion.

Can I Study in Australia After BCom?

Yes, but your BCom type decides the route. A four-year BCom (Hons) is treated much like other 16-year degrees, while a two-year BCom usually needs an extra step.

If you hold a two-year BCom and an MCom, ask the university to assess both. Business and accounting courses can also set subject prerequisites, so check those at the same time.

Entry Requirements: CGPA, English and Documents

Requirements vary by course, but most applications rest on the same four things:

  • A recognised bachelor’s degree with transcripts
  • Grades that meet the course minimum
  • An accepted English test result
  • Your passport, a CV and any course-specific items, such as a portfolio or work references

Many postgraduate courses ask for IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Health, teaching and some other fields can ask for more, and accepted alternatives vary by university. If you still need a score, start with IELTS preparation and test dates.

How Pakistani Grades Convert

Don’t rely on a single conversion chart. Universities can read the same percentage differently, depending on where you studied.

ANU’s indicative table for Pakistan shows why. A GPA of 4.0 out of 7.0 needs 65% from a Section 1 institution and 70% from a Section 2 institution. ANU also warns that actual conversions may vary, and that meeting these figures doesn’t guarantee entry.

Can I Study a Master’s in Australia With a 2.0 CGPA?

Direct entry with a 2.0 CGPA is unlikely. The published minimums we reviewed sit higher, with several postgraduate courses asking for about 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or more.

A low CGPA doesn’t always end the plan, though. Ask each university about a graduate certificate or diploma, since strong results there may support a later master’s application. Relevant work experience can help in some courses, but you need to confirm this in writing.

Be cautious about anyone who guarantees admission with a 2.0. Only the university can make that decision.

Applying With Result Awaiting

You can often apply before your final results arrive. Universities may issue a conditional offer based on your results so far, and ask for your final transcript and degree later.

A student visa needs a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), so timing matters. The University of Melbourne offers a conditional CoE in limited cases, and for graduate applicants this must be the final semester of study.

Melbourne’s process also requires English to be met already, runs through an authorised education agent and may apply a higher academic standard. Other universities set their own rules, so ask early.

Popular Master’s Programs by Field

Course titles change between universities, and that catches students out. If a search finds nothing, try the related titles below before you rule Australia out.

Master of Development Studies in Australia

A master of development studies suits students working on poverty, gender, climate or public policy. It also connects well with careers in NGOs, government and international agencies.

The University of Melbourne’s Master of Development Studies runs for two years full time, or one to one and a half years with relevant prior qualifications. It has March and July intakes and an optional Gender and Development stream. UNSW also offers a Master of Development Studies, listed at 24 months across three streams.

Higher Studies After an MBA in Australia

A second master’s is possible, but you’ll need a clear reason for it. The Genuine Student requirement looks at your study plans, and a same-level degree in a similar field can raise questions.

A Master of Data Science after an MBA has a clear purpose if your career needs technical skills. A second general business degree is much harder to justify.

Study Masters in Australia Cost for Pakistani Students

Budget for your first year before you choose a university. The table uses AUD 1 = about PKR 194, a converter rate from late October 2026, so check the current rate before you plan.

First-Year Expense

AUD / PKR Estimates
Tuition, indicative
AUD 28,000–50,000 Approx. PKR 5.4–9.7 million
Living costs, visa benchmark
AUD 29,710 Approx. PKR 5.8 million
Student visa application
AUD From 2,500 Approx. PKR From 485,000
Indicative total
AUD 60,210–82,210 Approx. PKR 11.7–15.9 million

This total leaves out health cover, flights, test fees and attestation costs. Actual living costs can also run higher in Sydney or Melbourne.

Tuition shifts a lot by course, so always use the fee for your exact intake. Students can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while their course is in session, but your budget shouldn’t rely on income you haven’t earned yet.

Is Free Study in Australia Possible for a Master’s?

Not in the usual sense. We aren’t aware of any Australian university offering free master’s places to international students, so “free” really means winning a full scholarship.

The main option for Pakistani applicants is the Australia Awards Scholarship. The 2027 eligibility checklist was demanding:

  • 16 years of education
  • At least five years of work experience in your field
  • Age 45 or under
  • Academic IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0
  • A course in one of Pakistan’s priority development sectors
  • Returning to Pakistan for at least two years after the scholarship

The 2027 round ran from 1 February to 30 April 2026. Dates for the next round haven’t been confirmed in the sources we checked, so watch the Australia Awards Pakistan website.

Fresh graduates should look at university scholarships instead, such as Macquarie’s Pakistan Early Acceptance Scholarship. Most of these awards reduce tuition rather than cover everything, so read the terms for the amount and any deadline.

Comparing a few courses on your own is manageable when your degree and budget are straightforward. It gets harder when your degree length, CGPA, fees, scholarship dates and visa timing all pull in different directions, because one wrong assumption can cost you an intake. Our study in Australia services for Pakistani students bring course selection, applications and visa guidance into one plan with a counsellor who knows these cases.

Student Visa and Post-Study Work Rules

Most students need the subclass 500 Student visa. You’ll generally need a valid CoE, Overseas Student Health Cover, financial evidence, English evidence and an answer to the Genuine Student requirement.

New rules started on 2 October 2026. Home Affairs now says applicants must apply from outside Australia unless they hold an eligible visa and meet an exemption. Partners and children can’t come with you unless an exemption applies.

If you’re married or have children, read the Student visa changes before you pay a deposit. Our visa document checklist covers the paperwork.

The Credit Trap: How a Shorter Master’s Can Affect Post-Study Work

Course credit sounds like a pure win, because it saves you time and money. It can also cost you your post-study work visa.

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) gives coursework master’s graduates two years and research master’s graduates three. Applicants must generally be 35 or under, and the application costs from AUD 5,750.

There’s a catch. Migration guides report that you need at least two academic years of Australian study, commonly measured as 92 weeks of CRICOS-registered study. Your Pakistani degree doesn’t count towards that.

So a one-year or 1.5-year master’s may leave you short, even if it looks like a bargain. Before you accept credit, ask the university for the CRICOS duration of your exact course and check it against the current 485 rules.

How to Apply From Pakistan

  1. Confirm your route. Check your degree length, CGPA and subject background first.
  2. Shortlist courses. Pick three to five, and compare fees, entry rules and CRICOS duration.
  3. Take your English test. Leave time for a retake.
  4. Prepare your documents. Gather transcripts, degree certificates and your passport.
  5. Apply and review your offer. Check all conditions, deadlines and refund terms.
  6. Accept your offer. Pay the deposit, arrange health cover and receive your CoE.
  7. Apply for your visa. Lodge it online with your financial and Genuine Student evidence.

Many courses start around February–March or July, but dates vary. Our guide on how early to apply for each intake can help you plan backwards from your start date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. You can apply for a master’s, graduate diploma or graduate certificate after a recognised bachelor’s degree. Your degree length, grades and subject background decide which level you can enter.

Sometimes, but direct entry isn’t guaranteed. Many students with two-year degrees need a qualifying program, graduate diploma or further study first, so ask the university for an assessment before applying.

Direct entry is unlikely, because published minimums we reviewed are usually higher. Ask universities about graduate certificate or diploma routes, and be wary of anyone who guarantees admission.

Yes, many universities can assess you on your results so far and issue a conditional offer. You’ll need to submit your final results by the university’s deadline, and a conditional CoE is only available in limited cases.

Plan for about AUD 60,000–82,000 in the first year, or roughly PKR 11.7–15.9 million at PKR 194 per AUD. That covers indicative tuition, the living-cost benchmark and the visa fee, but not health cover or flights.

Only with a full scholarship. Australia Awards is the main fully funded option for Pakistanis, and it needs 16 years of education, five years of relevant work experience and a return to Pakistan.

Yes. Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while their course is in session.

The 485 visa generally allows two years after a coursework or extended master’s and three years after a research master’s. You must meet all eligibility rules, including the age limit and study requirement.
